The classic little book "The Elements of Style" -- the English classroom staple that urges omitting needless words, explains subject-verb agreement and savors the active voice -- turns 50. The Elements of Style [Illustrated] – This edition of The Elements of Style includes illustrations. The true value comes in a connecting those highlighted and separated elements to style, theme, tool use, the continued evolution of the creator, etc, etc. A few days later I had the pleasure of reading a not so kind review of the Generation Y edition in the Boston Globe. I wish Strunk and White should be behanded, or is it deflanged, (I can't remember. This classic reference book is a must-have for any student and conscientious writer. New editions followed in 1972, 1979 and 1999; an illustrated edition was issued in 2005, and a 50th anniversary edition appears this month, published by Pearson Education Inc. Maira illustrated the 2005 edition of the classic The Elements of Style, combining two of my faves–grammar and art. In print for 40 years, Strunk and White's The Elements of Style is as timeless as Audrey Hepburn in a little black dress: an essential desk accompaniment for the sub-editor, writer and student or, indeed (indeed, she wrote!), anyone putting pen to paper; murdering Duncan and becoming king of Scotland in his place. While I still prefer my ragged dog-eared paperback edition of The Elements of Style, this nicely bound hardcover version is nice to flip through on occasion for inspiration and is always within arm's reach on my desk.
